Does reverse osmosis waste water?

The wastewater goes down the drain and carries the concentrated contaminants that were rejected by the membrane. Do I need a tank or tankless RO system?
A tank-based RO system stores 2 to 4 gallons of purified water in a pressurized tank inside the cabinet. When you open the faucet, water flows from the tank immediately at full pressure. A tankless RO system purifies water on demand and delivers it directly without storage. Tankless systems produce higher flow rates (up to 600 GPD vs. 50 to 100 GPD for tank models) and take up less cabinet space. However, tankless models cost more. A standard under-sink RO system has three types of replaceable components. The sediment and carbon pre-filters should be replaced every 6 to 12 months. If remineralization is important to you, many RO systems include an optional alkaline remineralization filter as a final stage that adds back trace minerals and raises the pH to 7.5 to 8.5. What water pressure do I need for an RO system?
An RO system requires a minimum of 40 PSI of incoming water pressure to push water through the membrane effectively. The ideal range is 50 to 80 PSI. If your home's water pressure is below 40 PSI, the system will produce water very slowly and the membrane will underperform. Can I install an RO system myself?
A basic under-sink RO system is designed for DIY installation. The kit typically includes push-fit connectors, a saddle valve for the drain, and a self-piercing valve for the cold water line. If you are comfortable with basic plumbing and drilling a hole in your countertop, you can complete the install in 2 to 3 hours. However, drilling through granite or quartz requires a diamond-tipped bit and careful technique to avoid cracking.
